A few weeks ago there was a musical guest on The Tonight Show that I had not heard of before. For the most part, I watch for Jimmy Fallon, so I don’t usually continue to watch until the end if I don’t already know that I like the band. This time I decided to keep watching, and let me tell you, I am so happy I did.
That night an artist by the name of Leon Bridges was playing. Bridges is a gospel and soul singer from Texas. He’s the same age as me (it was actually his birthday on Monday), but if you were to close your eyes and listen to his music, I doubt you would think he was a 20-something year-old in this century.
Bridges has been compared to the likes of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, and I would definitely have to agree with that. His newest album, Coming Home has a classic 1960’s vibe and groove to it. On more than one occasion I have wished that I was born in a different century so that I could experience music in its prime, but listening to Leon Bridges reminds me that there are still talented artists around today. On days when I just need something to speak to me, this is what I turn to. The song “River” is one of the most beautiful gospel songs I have ever heard, but there is definitely something more than that on this record. I dare you not to dance and sway your hips when listening to great tracks like “Better Man” and “Pull Away”. Do your ears a favour and take a listen today. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. If you are, I’m not sure we can be friends anymore…
Listen to Leon Bridges, Coming Home here.
