On Tuesday morning, I left the house earlier than I needed to, just so I could buy a copy of Mindy Kaling’s new book, Why Not Me? before my classes that morning. I have been waiting for this book since I first heard about it last year, but really it’s been longer than that. Ever since I read Kaling’s first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, I have wanted more. I love her humour, her honesty, and always want to know more about what it’s like to be a writer for TV (probably because I wish I could write like that).
In Why Not Me?, Kaling offers her trademark humour that we have come to know and love, but she shares much more than that. I feel like the passage of time from her last book to this one has made Mindy mature a lot. This maturity is clear in the experiences that she shares, her advice and especially in the way that she writes. While this recent release is just as funny (if not more so) than her last, I experienced something different while reading it. Not only does Kaling share more about her life, but the care in which she talks about her late mother, her friends, like fellow comedy writer, B.J. Novak or the young fans that she is now a role model to is more than just charming — it’s touching.
Mindy is still the girl that I want to be my BFF, but she is also the person that I would want to be my mentor. She knows the value of hard work, she loves what she does, and she’s good at it too! If you love television, comedy, or want to feel empowered, inspired and uplifted, this is the book for you.
Will you read Mindy’s new book? Did you enjoy her last one?
