When picking out an outfit for church on Sunday, I realized that I have a bit of a love affair with black and white lately. Every new dress or skirt that I have purchased within the last few months has been a bold (and one subtle) pattern as well as black and white. I love the versatility of black and white. I like to plan my outfits and coordinating makeup the day before, so having so much black and white in my closet right now is making everything simple. You may have also noticed, if you’re following me on Instagram, that I am having a bit of a moment with red lipstick, and black and white definitely makes that pop even more.
I’m a big fan of houndstooth right now, which you would have seen on Instagram, as well as in this post. This skirt or this top are perfect for adding a punch of personality while still being neutral in colour. Pair it with a black silk blouse and a red lip and you have a classic look. On the subtle end of the spectrum (or at least more subtle than houndstooth), are polka dots. I love polka dots in any season and in most colours, but black and white is definitely my favourite combination. Whether it’s white dots on black or black dots on white, it makes the perfect print for a dress that can be worn casual with flats or boots or dressed up with some pumps and a bold lip. I’m currently eyeing this one, and wishing I could afford this one.
If you’re not one for patterns, a simple white tee or striped sweater (or even a fun black and white graphic tee) goes great with black pants any day of the week. I’m currently loving this denim pair from Old Navy, though this pair would be great for a smarter look. Also, how cute are these striped ballet flats?
I love the simplicity of black and white, whether it’s for a basic day-to-day look or for a night on the town. Black and white are definitely staples in my wardrobe, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
