Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids | Review & Swatches

maybellinecolorsensationalvividsWhen I find a good lipstick, I want to try every shade possible in that range. Sometimes that’s not possible due to the price, availability and the shade range, but sometimes I luck out with a great budget buy. This is exactly what happened when I discovered Maybelline’s ColorSensational Vivids line last summer. I first fell for the shade Hot Plum, then Vivid Rose and it recently snowballed from there to the rest of the collection (minus two that really don’t suit me).

Fuchsia Flash is my favourite bright pink of the moment. It’s incredibly pigmented (as are the rest of the shades), and is perfect for adding something bright to perk up my look. For those who prefer something slightly darker, there is Vivid Rose. The formula of Vivid Rose is slightly drier than the rest of the line, but I find that the matte look really suits this type of shade. I especially love this one because I think it’s really versatile in terms of when I can wear it. I wear it all year round, as it’s not too bright for fall/winter nor is it too deep for spring/summer.

Hot Plum is a lovely fuchsia with a bit of orchid, which is a nice twist on a purple shade. It’s great for me because while I think white based lavender shades look great on others, they never quite look right on me when they’re this pigmented. I like that it has enough pink in there to make it more wearable, and perfect for a spring daytime look. While I love the pink shades, I was really hesitant when it came to the shade Shocking Coral. I really do not like orange shades, so I usually steer clear of anything with “coral” in the name because they never look good on me (despite me wishing they did). However, this shade is very different from any other coral shade. It’s likely because of the intensity of it, as well as the presence of pink that makes it much more flattering than I would have expected. I don’t always reach for this one (as it is much brighter and not as wearable for everyday), but I have a feeling that I will be using it a lot more as the weather heats up in the coming months.

Lastly, I have On Fire Red. Although my pink lipsticks far outnumber any other colour in my collection, I am a true red lipstick lover at heart. I first fell for reds back when I started wearing lipstick, and my love has not since ceased. It can be slightly difficult to find just the right red though, as many are too dark, too orangey, or not pigmented enough, but On Fire Red is none of the above. A classic red, this shade is perfect year round and is a staple for adding a bit of class to your makeup.

Overall, the formula of the lipsticks in this range are incredibly comfortable to wear. They are a satin finish (though Vivid Rose appears more matte when applied to the lips), apply really smooth and are very long-lasting as well. If you love bright shades, these are the lipsticks for you!

Have you tried any of these lipsticks? What is your favourite drugstore lipstick brand?
