Pretty Honest | Book Review

If you’re up on your beauty writers and bloggers, you probably know who Sali Hughes is. If not, you need to. Hughes is the resident beauty columnist for The Guardian and has written for ELLE, Glamour, Cosmopolitan and more. She’s been in the business for over twenty years and has vast knowledge about the world of beauty.

Pretty Honest: The Straight-Talking Beauty Companion is Sali Hughes’s first book (her second was released last fall) and contains chapters on everything you’d ever want to know about beauty from application tips to the evolution of beauty in a woman’s life, as well as chapters dedicated to fragrance, skin care, red lipstick and more.

This is hands-down the best book on beauty that I have ever read. It’s thorough, with a lot of information about the science or philosophy behind products (I imagine her latest book does even more of this) as well as advice and personal anecdotes that are completely honest and humorous. As the title suggests, it’s a straight-talking look at beauty and Hughes doesn’t hold back her opinions (she isn’t on board with the contouring either) on beauty trends or societal views on beauty.

If you love beauty, you need to read this. Plus, it looks great on your shelf or table. You should also check out her website and her video series, “In the Bathroom…” where she interviews professionals, models and icons and goes through their beauty stashes in their bathrooms. It’s brilliant.
