For a while, I have watched Netflix to fall asleep, usually with episodes of Gilmore Girls or The Office that I’ve seen so many times that I can just listen to them and know what is happening. However, though that might help me sleep some nights, I’ve realized it’s really not good for me. I tried listening to music like I used to when I was a teenager, but it didn’t work as well as it used to, and going to sleep with silence just does not work for me. A few months ago, I decided to try listening to Jim Gaffigan’s comedy albums as I was going to sleep, and it worked wonders. It puts me in a good mood, as I’m basically laughing myself to sleep. I’ve continued to do this now and then and I find that I sleep longer through the night, while other nights I would wake up multiple times in the night. I’ve made my way through Jim Gaffigan’s albums, John Mulaney, Anjelah Johnson and Nate Bargatze. And now, I’m listening to one of my favourites, Bob Newhart. His imagination of the phone conversation about smoking tobacco is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my life.
There are still a few nights where I fall asleep watching Netflix, because I like to watch something as part of my night routine, but those nights I definitely notice a difference in how I feel when I wake up in the morning. There’s something about listening to Jim Gaffigan talk about food or Anjelah Johnson talking about getting her nails done that delivers sweeter dreams and happier mornings. I will definitely continue to do this each night, especially as exams are coming up, and I will need the stress-relieving effects of comedy while I sleep.
I’m curious, do you watch TV or listen to music to fall asleep? Or do you need complete silence?
