Today is a special day. Today is the day that we celebrate mothers. While I believe that we should celebrate our mothers every day, it’s nice to have a specific day set aside for that purpose.
I have been very blessed to have the mother that I do. She is kind, selfless, strong, smart, and funny. She has always been there for me, even when she didn’t agree with my choices or understand why I was making them, she supported me. She celebrates my victories, and always makes sure that I know that she is proud of me. She always has advice to share, but she understands the importance of my agency, and stands back to let me make my decisions. She’s my first call when I need help with a recipe, and a very close second when something exciting happens.
I have been very blessed to have the grandmothers that I do. My Granny and Grandma are strong, independent, talented and loving. They love their families deeply, and have welcomed every new family member with open arms. They are talented writers, who have passed down to me a love of literature and expression through the written word. They make others feel loved, and inspire me to do better each and every day.
I have also been very blessed to have the mother-in-law that I do, who welcomed me into her family with no questions. She is strong, passionate, inclusive, and selfless. She raised my husband to be a gentleman, to treat women and others with respect. She loves her family and friends, and when she lets her guard down and lets you in, you’re in for good.
I have also been very blessed to have the sister and sister-in-law that I do. My sisters are compassionate, strong, smart and selfless. They are always there for me, to hear my complaints, to indulge my shopping habits, and get my Gilmore Girls fix. They make me want to be a good mom in the future, just like they are. They make me feel like I have a place in the world, when I find it difficult to make friends. They inspire me, encourage me, and let me be myself.
I have also been very blessed to have the aunts and cousins that I do. They are sweet, fun, tender-hearted and strong. They see the good in others, make them feel important, and treat them as Heavenly Father wants them to be treated. They take care of each other, and are quick to forgive. They inspire me, and make me want to be a better woman.
I have also been very blessed to have the friends that I do. They are smart, forgiving, strong and kind. They have taught me to laugh through the pain of life and to focus on the good. They inspire me to be a better writer and go for the goals that seem out of my reach. They have taught me to be less fearful, and try something new, even if I don’t know what to expect. They inspire me to look past limitations, and stop judging others.
Every woman who I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with in my nearly twenty-seven years has had a deep impact on me. You have helped me to see a glimpse of the potential that I have, and help me to see myself the way God does. You make me better, and you help me to continue to be the woman that I am meant to be. In one way or another, you have all had a part in mothering me, and today I honour you. Happy Mother’s Day!
