I don’t feel like I’ve been busier than normal these past few weeks, but somehow my priorities have changed a little bit. I’ve come to realize that there’s no point in me blogging when I’m feeling uninspired, I need sleep, or other opportunities come up. Lately, all of those things have happened one after another, so I’ve stepped away for a bit, and I’ve given myself permission to be more flexible about when and what I post. I really do want to get back into posting every day, but I’m not sure when I will be able to do that every week, but I promise it will happen, or at least there will be some consistency soon. Maybe it will be next week, maybe it will be in a month. We’ll see. But please know that Be Loverly is still very important to me, and I will continue to post as much as I can, and I appreciate each reader that I have.
Since I haven’t posted in a while (especially my a weekend post), I feel like I haven’t shared anything with you in far too long. So far, July has been great. Early on in the month, I went to Emerald Lake (Yoho National Park) with my mom, sisters and the kids. I was able to drive all the way there and back, which was really fun. I’m actually surprised at how much I enjoy driving, and I am so grateful for Chantelle and her willingness to teach me, and let me drive her vehicle so often. The reason we went to Emerald Lake is because Mount Burgess is there, which was named after my great-great grandfather, Alexander MacKinnon Burgess, who was the Deputy Minister of the Interior in the late 1800s (you can read a brief bio here). We have been going there as a family for as long as I can remember, and it’s so great that we’re passing the tradition to the next generation.
I’ve also started running again. Well, sort of. I’m nowhere near the level of fit that I was 3 years ago when I was running consistently, but it’s been great to go for a jog a few times a week. I’ve notice such a change in my body, and my mental state. I still have a long ways to go, but I am happy with myself for not giving up when I can barely run a full km without walking part of it. I’m sure I will be blogging more about running experiences in the future (those are the times when I have the majority of my epiphanies).

Last week, I went with my sister-in-law and Michael to the Stampede. It’s been two years since I was last there, so it was fun to go back and enjoy the food and people watching. Even though I grew up in Calgary, I never went to the Stampede as a kid (it was far too expensive, and my parents weren’t interested), so I don’t have a great love for the Stampede like a lot of people that I know. It was great to be there for Mikey’s first experience though, and of course the food was amazing. We also went on one of the few days where it wasn’t raining, which was a bonus.
On Friday was my sister, Marni’s birthday, and Saturday was Chantelle’s birthday. We had some great meals together (including brunch at Pie Cloud on Saturday, which was amazing), and enjoyed games too. We played Things in a Box on Friday night, which was fun but it took so long because we all kind of think a like, and it took such a long time to figure out who said what. On Saturday, I helped my mom make a beach pull-apart cake. My mom baked it and iced it, and I decorated it. It was actually a lot fun, but like any other baking experiment, we now know how to do it better next time. It made me want to make cupcakes more like I used to a few years ago.
Today is the first day that I haven’t seen rain or storm clouds in what feels like weeks (though it’s probably only been 9 or 10 days). I like rain sometimes, but it really wears me out when it happens every day, or when you think it’s fine and then two minutes later it’s raining. Yesterday was actually the first day that I didn’t run in the rain since the first week of July.
What have you been up to this summer? What do you want to see on Be Loverly? Let me know in the comments!
